(Many thanks to Eve-il-vis for the nasty photos you see here. Will there be more to come in the next few days...? True Evil )
Fantastic fun on Sunday on soggy and conservative Long Island, thanks to everyone who was part of it. Highlights of the day included numerous pratfalls, Yi's fine tailoring, assorted chaotic exchange handoffs, "Hey, mama!", Diane's wig being roughly 4% larger than her entire body, Eve as the French Elvis, damn Elvis songs that now won't leave my head, Monica's eye-lashes, Susan's incredibly well-stocked cooler, Ernest's lost skirt, grim-faced police officers, Anil's not needing a wig, Joel's 5 a.m. hike through Harlem in the red outfit (no one looked twice), Mark's discovery that it was easier to pee while wearing a dress, "Oh, Priscilla!!", actual beer at the post-race party this year (sorry, Diane), Nate's dancing, Dan's overwhelming joy to be wearing a wig, Mary's exhausted stare, everyone's muddy feet, Kevin's ruptured beer cans, Zac's plastic mask, praying for rain, Christina nearly killing herself for the team (we all hope you are feeling better), and last but certainly not least Tom's leadership, inspiration, and the fact that this was the FIRST year that NONE of us heard him say, "I am NEVER doing this again, no way, I don't care what ANYBODY says, etc."

I wanted to say a special thanks to Susan for bringing her car and driving (and honking), Monica for being fan # 1 out on the course and for painting the cars, and Tanya (and Eve) for driving and taking photos. Of course, a huge thanks to Tom for being our Captain Relay once again. Finally, to Dan and Eve and Yi for coming over from our sister/brother running club and joining in the fun. We could not have done it without you!

Your next task: start plotting for next year ... the Front Runners claim they will dethrone us easily from the Spirit of the Race award. First planning meeting: This Thursday night at Dublin House!

Hope everyone made it home safe and sound. I have a v-shaped sunburn on my chest ... however did that happen??

 This is someone's HR Director

That's Anil's real hair | They screwed up our team names, and reversed some of the individual leg splits, but who cares, really, we were there for the Spirit Award and we were victorious.

Unfortunately, there are no photos with the results, but we're taking care of that on this website, don't you worry.

See you soon,
Douglas

Christinel-vis writes, "In case anyone is worried, I'm fineworked out hard next a.m. I am certain my "illness" had much more to do with the mysterious 12 a.m. deli food I had the night before than my leg of the relay. I cannot wait until next year. The Elvis/Drag Racers will be even hotter in leotards and tu tus."

Post-postscript:
Tomel-vis writes, "Douglas summed it up perfectly. Anyone can put on a costume, but when it's a great bunch of people like all of you that's how we win a Team Spirit award. Thanks again to all our drivers who got up early, let us trash your car and for cheering. I look forward to it again next year."

Eve-il-vis writes, "Monday morning, my non-runner friends are asking me about 'the race,' and I can only give them anapparentlyincoherent account of what happened. The protagonists of my story include an elf-like Elvis running very fast (D), a caped long-haired woman with a muscular body (M), a skirted, sexy man dancing in a deserted Long Island parking lot (E), and many other strangely attractive creatures in shiny armors and muddy aasics. They think I'm delirious."

Susal-vis writes, "Cheese, anyone?
"Heading out at 6:00 a.m., I thought, well, IT'S NOW OR NEVER and yes, I'VE GOT A LOT OF LIVIN TO DO, but I volunteered and wouldn't want any SUSPICIOUS MINDS or anyone ALL SHOOK UP, so I pack up the cooler and arrive at Jones Beach, yes, NOW AND THEN, THERE'S A FOOL SUCH AS I, and I CAN'T HELP FALLING IN LOVE at the site of Elvises! No, it's not the DEVIL IN DISGUISE and will be ALWAYS ON MY MIND.
"So, even though there's a little SHAKE, RATTLE and ROLL in the car today, THAT'S ALL RIGHT MAMA; and YOU DON'T HAVE TO SAY YOU LOVE ME, I'm just glad everyone had a great time, I had a blast at the WHOLE LOTTA SHAKIN' GOIN' ON too. It's just THE WONDER OF YOU, Harriers, THE WONDER OF YOU!"

Post-post-post-post-postscript:
Nachoel-vis writes, "Thanks one and all for a great time. It was this race last year that served as my initiation into the Harriers (albeit reluctantly!).
"Let's not forget a few things...
The biased judges,
Crash living up to his nickname,
Knowing we had won the Spirit of the Race award before we left Jones Beach,
Kevin's driving,
Yi's watch (does size matter?),
Mark's handoff,
Wigs lost during the race,
Anil's foot odor,
Joel trying to very politely describe how a hooker solicited him,
Rain sun heat and humidity, and
The smiling Suffolk police.
"Have a great week everyone and thanks for a great race!"

Post-post-post-post-post-postscript (from The Dog House II ):
Daniel-vus writes, "To top their previous year's costume (dressing in drag), the Harriers opted for the Elvus Presely look this year. Nine of them managed to pick clean the Good Will and show up in flashy red jumpsuits, complete with cape. The rest of us had to come up with our own costumes. I, being a late addition to the team, only had one day to find my outifit. I managed to find a white jumpsuit, although it lacked the bling bling, if you will. But, sporting a wig and some proper shades, the look was obvious. Of course, my costume was not as authentic-looking as the others. So, on my run I heard people commenting as Douglas went by'Hey, it's Elvis!' 'Way to Go Elvis!' 'Lookit's the King.' Then shortly thereafter I would run by ... 'And lookhere is the ghetto Elvis!' 'What is this, Elvis the janitor?' Unfortunately I was much too tired and dehydrated to actually reply to any of these folks. My natural reply would have been 'DON'T BE CRUEL,' of course."
