    Stephanie Hodge 1:20:54 6:10 / mile  (1st female overall, $5000 prize)
Our robot cat reports, "you probably know about that Snickers race on the treadmill last month—the three way tie—they each got the $5000 first prize.  it was held at the espn bar in times square.  the winners were jerry, bob sweeney, and maybe rafael someone?? can't remember.  stephanie hodge won the women's.  kim griffin dropped.  toby dropped.  bob said there were a lot of drops when it looked like it wasn't going to be an easy payday.  the treads only went to 6 minute pace so it was three guys running 6 minute pace start to finish.  0 incline.  no reports listed anywhere that i can find.  not advertised—except for something at nysc which lent them the treadmills.  bob said there were no fans, and the lighting from the film crews made it super hot and the treadmills were packed in side by side."

Nice to see Art win with a time deserving of a win.  Not like this.  Or this!  It used to be that you could run 16-flat and it got you zilch and not even top-10.  Nowadays, 19 minutes gets you an overall victory.

In the true spirit of a top U.S. financial firm, Merrill Lynch seems to have had a major hiring spree lately and easily won the coed team competition in this downtown evening race of questionable length.  There were also a few Elvis sightings, no question.

Photos courtesy of New York Road Runners:
  • DKNY at the start.
  • Conway wonders, "Why is this guy up front?  He does not race that fast, does he?"  Apparently he does—and he's younger than he looks, too— as he won the women's 12-29 age group award!
  • DKNY and Conway try not to stare at a guy who needs a jock.
  • DKNY remains dignified and does not stare, instead making use of her well-honed sense of touch.

Great job to Anil, Glenn, Diane and Ernest who smoked the Philly Half-Marathon this weekend, and for Monica who once again came along as the cheering section (albeit being politely told she was too loud)...  Fear not, soon she won't be injured and her running shoes will be back on.  Weekend highlights included luxe accomodation at sexy Ralph's place (Diane's high school friend), Glenn's new pumpkin racers (which helped him beat the Central Park bridle path terrorist), Anil's new "I'm too sexy" attitude, and Ernest's "how can we be in Philly and NOT eat Philly cheese steaks"....

Congratulations, too, to Shelly Hermann of Short Hills, NJ, winner of the accompanying 5K event.  She is a former Harrier and several folks' old training buddy.

  • OCEAN TO SOUND RELAY (a.k.a. DOGHOUSE ROCK), Long Island, Sept. 14:
Highlights of the day included numerous pratfalls, Yi's fine tailoring, assorted chaotic exchange handoffs, "Hey, mama!", Diane's wig being roughly 4% larger than her entire body, Eve as the French Elvis, damn Elvis songs that now won't leave my head, Monica's eye-lashes, Susan's incredibly well-stocked cooler, Ernest's lost skirt, grim-faced police officers, Anil's not needing a wig, Joel's 5 a.m. hike through Harlem in the red outfit (no one looked twice), Mark's discovery that it was easier to pee while wearing a dress, "Oh, Priscilla!!", actual beer at the post-race party this year (sorry, Diane), Nate's dancing, Dan's overwhelming joy to be wearing a wig, Mary's exhausted stare, everyone's muddy feet, Kevin's ruptured beer cans, Zac's plastic mask, praying for rain, Christina nearly killing herself for the team (we all hope you are feeling better), and last but certainly not least Tom's leadership, inspiration, and the fact that this was the FIRST year that NONE of us heard him say, "I am NEVER doing this again, no way, I don't care what ANYBODY says, etc."

  • NEW YORK CITY MARATHON TUNE-UP (18 MILES), Central Park, August 24:
    Tom Nettuno 1:58:29 6:34 / mile

    Douglas Sawyer 2:09:17 7:10

    Thomas Scott 2:27:03 8:10
Competitors took advantage of miraculously glorious August weather (mid-60's & low humidity) and ran some pretty sweet times for such a long race.  A "death march" it was not, spoiling many a pre-race pessimist's prediction.  Long Island's Tom Nettuno broke the 2-hour mark.  Jessica Grothe ran 7:10's, was 13th woman, and won an age group award.  (Let's remember that last year she ran 7:50's for the women's 10K.)  And "The Shark" was awesome again, following up on his sub-6:00's at last week's Club Team ChampionshipsDoggy Dan kept him company for most of the way, and they dropped the pace steadily all the way down to 6:02 for the last mile!  According to one unnamed source, this PR should dramatically increase Anil's already valuable stock with his admirers of the feminine persuasion—which is all that really counts in the end.

Good showing for the NYH women, placing 6th out of 19 teams. Unfortunately for the men, conflicts regarding trains, brownouts, burnouts, work, family, jobs, injuries, overtraining, bad karma, Stuart, and/or sobriety prevented us from fielding a full (10-man) team. But they had fun anyway. Better luck next time!
