  • VANCOUVER SUN RUN 10K, Vancouver, Canada, April 17:
    Douglas Hegley 36:45 5:55 / mile
With over 47,000 runners, this was one of the biggest 10k races in the world. There were many invited athletes, and it served as an unofficial road 10k national championship in Canada. The competition was very strong, with 7 guys all dipping under 30:00. Douglas managed 136th place overall and 17th in the 40-44 division, running 36:45 in the cool rain. "I have never run in a race with this many participants before," he reports. "What a mob scene."

  • MUDDERS & GRUNTERS, FDR State Park, Westchester, April 3:
    Ravings of a mud-loving lunatic:

Rain rain rain ... the climb from the parking lot to the registration table is already ankle deep mud ... ah, warm fire ... is that all you are going to wear? ... NO DIVING, IT'S DEEP BUT NOT THAT DEEP ... rope drops, gun goes off, somebody has fallen down already! ... faster, faster, swampy, swampier ... COLD muck, what is that smell? ... logs, logs, this race never had so many logs fallen across the trail .. who put this hill there? ... what is that screaming coming from behind me? ... hey, this isn't a trail! .. ow! brambles! I'm bleeding! ... down this hill, through mud the consistency of cold beef stew, and then the river crossing, deep and cold this year, just jump in just jump in just AAAAAHHHH!!! Whoooooo!! Damn, that's COLD! My feet are frozen, up the hill, up the hill, up the god damned hill!!!! FINISH LINE! Ah, warm fire, soggy clothes, hot "showers" for all to watch ... cookies for awards, rain coming down harder. Why can't every race be exactly like this??

  • THE RACE FOR THE HARDCORE
The Harriers, Reservoir Dogs, and friends and family had strong showings in Bitter cold B-town on Saturday, with NYH fielding a Bevy of Beauties for the 10-miler and 10 Dogs swarming both the relay and the 10-miler, and the Great uber-flappy-eared-Basset Gatsby and the ubiquitous Yi MD providing moral and medicinal support for both.
