Notes on Coaching, the Harrier Way
The Harriers love to run hard and to race well, but have no interest in being subjected to hard-core, traditional methods of coaching. That is, some Harriers don't respond well to being ordered around by anyone (some of us have, in fact, been accused by former coaches of being "uncoachable rebels!" ... a fact of which we are most proud). Therefore, any and all workouts listed on Harrier schedules should be thought of as guidelines or suggestions ... no one should feel forced to do a workout that he or she feels is not to his or her benefit. Any Harrier may attend any workout, and any workout may be modified based on individual fitness, goals, etc.

That being said, Harriers also understand that it takes hard work and some level of structure to be able to achieve peak performances. One of the best ways to get in top shape is to adhere to a planned set of workouts that will deliver you to a target race ready to go all out. The Harriers philosophy most certainly includes an understanding that no single coach and no single method of training can possibly be the "best" for every single runner. We encourage all Harriers to attend workouts ... even if you have some other kind of run in mind, at least stop by to say hello ... you may even find a partner or two for your own workout.
